Many natives resent any incursions on their islands
THE NATIVES
These islands were by no means uninhabited before the DINO-PIRATES and the ninjas arrived. Such a vast and varied terrain of course gave rise to numerous nations and cultures, some of which continue to thrive, while others disappeared long ago and now only exist as ruined monuments and dire legends.
Natives amongst the islands come in all shapes and sizes, as do their nations. There are tall, imperious warriors of the great Impsalan nation, always seeking new territories to subject to their iron-fisted rule. There are laid-back island dwellers who want nothing more than to sit under a coconut palm and sleep through the afternoon. There are cliff-dwelling ruby miners, fierce hunters, fearless ocean voyagers and shrewd merchants. All sorts. The one uniting quality they share is their hatred of the Empire and its near-constant efforts to bring the islands under its dominion. Nobody wants that.
Attitudes towards pirates and ninjas are less uniform. Many DINO-PIRATES are in fact natives who signed up for a pirate voyage, liked the life, and stuck to it. Fewer have joined ninja clans, but it's not unheard of. In some cases, where a clan suffered a near-complete loss of its members, they have brought in natives and trained them their secrets, rather than let the tradition die out. But at the same time, many natives learn to resent the DINO-PIRATES, or are fearful and suspicious of the ninjas. Some islands are populated by natives so xenophobic they immediately set upon and slaughter any outsiders who come ashore. And, you know, cannibals.
At any rate, the natives of these myriad islands come from cultures as varied and distinct as the many islands themselves. No simple descriptions can hope to cover all the groups found here. Some native nations described in this setting include:
- Impsala: Large island kingdom with big plans and few scruples.
- Hikakkilalli: This island includes a volcano, peaceful ruby-mining natives, disreputable pirates, and more.
- Yirin: An ancient power now reduced to performing meaningless rituals
