Ingolo Heart-Eater
Updated: Sept. 18, 7:09 p.m.
“Why do you THINK they call me Heart-Eater?”
A massive warrior, scowling and preparing to eat his enemies, preferably while they still live — this is the popular image of the infamous Ingolo Heart-Eater.
And unlike most popular images, it’s largely true.
Ingolo is a terrifying man, utterly without remorse or compassion. What drives him is a mystery, but he seems bound and determined to acquire wealth and to spread fear in the largest portions possible. He spends most of his time sulking in his base on Tar-es-Kamal (well, people assume he’s sulking. For all anyone knows, he’s practicing the tin whistle), waiting for the moment to sally forth, to pillage and burn… and eat.
Yes, Ingolo Heart-Eater eats hearts. He believes the hearts of his enemies give him strength and life, and that he can live forever if he keeps up this practice. It’s hard on his crew, but they are well-motivated to find and conquer prizes on their captain’s behalf.
He is brutal in combat, but far more subtle in his ship-handling than most suspect. It’s no coincidence that he’s been so successful — for all his superstition and savagery, Ingolo is intelligent and perceptive, and he learned his seamanship well. His massive flagship is handled with alarming skill, and many a merchant captain convinced his little sloop could easily out-maneuver the great warship has been unpleasantly surprised.
