Huddled off the southern tip of an island swarming with deadly predators, the little settlement of Seagaard makes a welcome stop for pirate captains looking to spend some coin, resupply, and avoid the risk of being recognized. Nobody is ever recognized at Seagaard —Evanisk, the undisputed master of this retreat, makes sure of that.

Evanisk, a reknowned dinosaur hunter, knew little about pirates or seafaring when he first came to Seagaard. He built a small cottage on the largest of these islands, where his stately mansion stands now, to use as a base for hunting the great dinosaurian creatures on the larger island to the north. He’d been there for some time when a bedraggled pirate captain put in with his ship, asking for fresh water.

Evanisk told him water was easy enough to acquire over on that big island there.

When the survivors of the pirate crew came screaming back, terrified of the beasts they’d run afoul of, Evanisk realised that what was easy for him was not so easy for others.

And so he built the Cisterns, and the Waterbridge, to fill them. It took the hunter more than a year of struggle in the dense jungles to build his own aqueduct from the springs to the much safer offshore islands where he lived, but Evanisk kept at his task. Now a steady flow of fresh, pure water gushes across the narrow channel and keeps full the half-dozen cisterns where pirate captains may (for a fee, of course) water their thirty crews.

Prospering on the water trade, Evanisk used his profits to further secure his business, building forts at either entrance to the sheltered waters of Seagaard. He keeps both the Little and the Great Redoubt manned at all times, and there are cannon situated on all sides of the islands. There is an inn and a number of residences, taverns and other entertainments for visiting crews. Visitors are responsible for their own security, but any crew that causes trouble for the locals can expect to have their ship sunk at anchor in the quiet waters of Seagaard.

Evanisk

Owner: barsoomcore

Once a great dinosaur hunter, the mighty Evanisk retreated from a life of fame and reknown. He has faced, fought and vanquished the mightiest creatures in the islands, and bears many scars from those confrontations.

What drove him to Seagaard he does not say, but he no longer seeks out the great beasts he once hunted with such determination. Now he is grown portly, dressed in rich, heavy robes, bedecked with dazzling jewelry, and always surrounded by dozens of sycophants.

His house on Seagaard is a massive, palatial home with dozens of rooms, where the wealthy magnate indulges himself in every pleasure he desires. Rumours of Evanisk’s wealth have tempted theives already, but those who have tried to lift a portion have met with brutal fates — Evanisk remains a master with a knife, and has proven his skills more than once in recent memory.

The screams of the last would-be thieves, tied to stakes on the mainland for wandering predators to find, still echo in the memories of the current residents of Seagaard.

The Iron Beggars Clan

Owner: barsoomcore

Master Sukhotara came to Seagaard more than ten years ago, seeking a quiet base for his small clan. The Iron Beggars eschew all material possessions, and train to fight with their bare hands, toughening their bodies with constant exercise and exertion. It is said that Iron Beggar ninja have skin that can resist sword blows, and that their fists can blast apart solid rock. Many other clans disdain the Beggars’ slovenly appearance and undisciplined manners, but those who confront them leave with respect for Master Sukhotara’s techniques.

The clan headquarters, set back from the populated areas of the islands, consists of a number of ramshackle huts where the ninja live. They do their training outside, on the beach or in the forest. Master Sukhotara is known for his Tree-Felling Punch, and supplies much of the lumber required by the other denizens of Seagaard.

The Purple Eye

Owner: barsoomcore

Smouldering at the south-east corner of Seagaard, this volcanic outcropping glows with a baleful violet light. During the day, puffs of black smoke and ominious creaks and cracking sounds issue from the small mountain’s tip. Some say that an enormous gemstone causes the strange colour of the light, but those who have ventured in search of it come down empty-handed, coughing and retching from the fumes upon the summit.

Too often, those treasure-seekers turn sick, their skin erupting in purple boils that bleed and ooze. Many die, and none of the locals will venture up the sides of the Purple Eye. What causes the strange light, and those deep groaning cries from within the earth, no one can say.

Some shaman and others of arcane interests come to Seagaard specifically to study the Purple Eye. They build huts on the lower slopes of the mountain and engage in their mystical studies. These sorts are tolerated by the local population, but watched carefully. All too often one who spends to much time considering the mysteries of this mountain go mad and are prone to murderous rampages. If there is a pattern to these attacks, no one in Seagaard has noticed one.
