Desperation Reef

Updated: Sept. 26, 4:44 p.m.

This island is a canonical part of the DINO-PIRATES OF NINJA ISLAND setting. You can still edit it, but aware that the admins may revert your changes if they don't align with the overall vision of the setting.

Summary

Really more an island-to-be than an actual island, Desperation Reef is a deadly coral archipelago, 90% of which lurks just below the surface. Storms and strong currents have caused a number of ships to founder on the shores, and the wrecks have been cobbled together into a shantytown that serves as a refuge for the less savory elements of the region.

Over the years, the currents have left a fair amount of sand among the shipwrecks and the coral. While not sufficient for large scale agriculture, there is enough arable land to support a number of citrus trees, whose fruit is the second most profitable export of Desperation Reef.

The most profitable export is scum. Not the foamy stuff that floats upon the waves after a storm, but the kind that frequents taverns and prisons. Many a mercenary, er, adventuring, band seeks out the Reef to recruit members.

Captains have learned to give the Reef a wide berth, and those that wish to do business there typically lay off a fair distance and signal for a ferryman who knows the local waters well enough to traverse them in a small vessel safely.

Ping Mai

Owner: barsoomcore

Exiled from the Empire for publishing heretical treatises that questioned the divine right of the Emperor, Ping Mai was destined for the ruby mines of Hikakilalli when his ship was seized by pirates. His quick wits and rudimentary knowledge of astronomy earned him a place among the crew, and for years he sailed the seas. He retired to Desperation Reef, where he earns a rather lucrative living as an information broker.

Admiral Drayson Scabeau

Drayson is the nominal head of government of Desperation Reef. An impressed sailor who seized upon the distraction provided by a storm to lead a revolt, his ambition was sadly not matched by his seamanship, and his life as a pirate was short-lived.
